He motivates the doctoral students with his kindness and communicative abilities. Jens allows his doctoral students to be at the center and be the main actors in their education, knowing that they can always turn to him for support when needed. His supervision is built on mutual trust, and he gives his doctoral students responsibility and pride in their achievements. He makes his doctoral students feel like equals, working with him rather than for him. Jens recognizes his doctoral students' progress and helps them understand how significant each of their specific tasks is on the path to achieving the overarching goal, a doctoral degree.

He is appreciated, for seeing his PhD students as individuals, without comparing them. The working style between him and his students is not as boss and follower, but as coworkers. In the eyes of his PhD students, Kentaro is the role model of supervisors.

Thomas spreads the energy, support and enthusiasm needed to overcome many of the obstacles in life. Thanks to his support, the dissertation work never feels like a lonely undertaking. He always has time for his students and he tries to support everyone to reach their true potential. If you are feeling down, he gently hands you a ladder to come up again. If you are in a flow he lets you run and just makes sure that you don’t run in the completely wrong direction or over the edge. He is there every time and at any time if you have a question and through his answers he supports our ability to find solutions to problems and he doesn’t give up until we really understand. Even when asking the same questions over and over again, Thomas stays calm and never gives up. He truly has the feeling for the amount and kind of support needed in good and bad times.
Supervisor of the Year 2017In addition to being an experienced researcher with a good reputation and high competence in his field, Dick is a role model for doctoral students. Dick has found a good balance between professional work and the personal relationship with his doctoral students, which is one of the many reasons he is liked and respected by both doctoral students and many others in the field of wood research. Dick always provides prompt feedback and dedicates a tremendous amount of time to his doctoral students. Despite travel being a significant part of his job, he responds to emails within hours. The feedback is always direct, honest, constructive, and, to say the least, valuable. What stands out the most is his willingness and commitment to provide support

He always comes up with different alternatives without judging them in advance and he positively adds our ideas to the debate. His attention to our personal challenges beyond our professional challenges we face improves the work quality and help us feel that we have support and are taken care of and that we are not merely “cogs in the wheel” at a workplace with high tempo.

She is an outstanding mentor who always cares for her doctoral students and teaches them to be motivated, resilient, and independent team players and researchers. Jurate shares her knowledge with her doctoral students whenever needed but also emphasizes that they should be creative, curious, and critical in all they do. Furthermore, Jurate encourages her doctoral students to build their own international network by attending conferences to present their work and establish connections.

This creates a conducive atmosphere and motivation, which is crucial for producing excellent research results. He is competent and engaged in the work of doctoral students, providing professional guidance in both theoretical issues and practical problems that a doctoral student may encounter during their research education. The phrase 'I don't have time' is not in his vocabulary. A supervisor's task is to guide the doctoral student through their research education. Roger is an example of how this should be done, going above and beyond what can reasonably be expected of him due to his dedication.
